7th Grade ELA Week at a Glance

 2nd 9 Weeks is here! Lessons in class will shift from understanding narrative/ informational texts to analyzing literary/informational texts through writing in this 9 weeks.  Teachers will review analysis writing strategies for body paragraphs in addition to teaching skills associated with mood(diction/connotation) and perspective. Students will practice these skills with "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" as they begin the short story. Some poetry terms will be reviewed while reading "The Raven" as well.   On Friday, students will take a practice cold quiz on poetry. 

Stagger start days will be spent going over rules and procedures, learning about Google Classroom, and getting to know one another. The remainder of the week students will review explicit and implicit comprehension with mini-lessons, guided practice, and individual practice using The Call of the Wild . They will read Chapter 1-2 this week.   On Friday, the students will take two practice assessments that will gauge their knowledge of the skills they learned during the week. 

The assignments  for this week are listed below.  This is a suggestion of one way for students to do the work this week. However, they are free to complete the work any way they feel works for them. PLEASE CLICK TURN IN WHEN YOU HAVE COMPLETED ALL ASSIGNMENTS. Monday: Read “The Interlopers” short story. Write a summary of the events that occurred. Tuesday: Watch the video on how setting can impact a text. Welcome to 2020!! Analyzing argument and informational texts will be our focus for the next few weeks. Students will learn about the types of evidence and reasoning in various argument articles this week. We will begin reading Hidden Figures and use this text to practice skills such as narrative writing, test taking strategies and analysis writing.

We hope you enjoyed Fall Break! We start the 2nd 9 weeks on Wednesday. Students will learn about legends and myths this week in preparation for reading "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by Washington Irving. Using this story, students will practice a variety of skills like compare/contrast, inferring, and analyzing story elements. In addition to stories and informational texts, students will practice reading and analyzing narrative poetry throughout the week.

Welcome back!!! During this week we will get to know each other, learn expectations, prepare materials for the year, and take a pre-assessment.

Welcome Back!! We hope you are  refreshed and ready for the last stretch. The next few weeks will be a review of lessons we have learned throughout the year. Students will review literary analysis, argument and narrative writing this week. They will practice vocabulary and multiple choice as well. Cold Quiz 4.1 will be taken on Thursday and an on-demand writing will be written on Friday .

Welcome back! We hope you had a relaxing break. Students will read The Pearl by John Steinbeck this week. After every chapter students will complete a quiz. In addition to this book, students will grapple with assessing evidence found in arguments. They will locate textual evidence, identify the type and determine whether it is relevant and sufficient. At the end of the week, students will practice independently finding, identifying, and evaluating evidence within an argument.

The week of the field trip to Saenger Theatre has arrived! We will finish up The Legend of Sleepy Hollow before Wednesday. The week will be filled with direct lessons on literary analysis writing. Prompt analysis, thesis statement writing, introduction writing, planning body paragraphs, writing body paragraphs, writing conclusions and conducting revisions will be reviewed. On Friday students will take a teacher directed cold quiz and practice revisions on an essay.

We hope you enjoyed your Fall break!! In preparation for our field trip to the Saenger Theatre next week, we will read The Legend of Sleepy Hollow .  Reading this story will allow us to grapple with characterization, setting, and plot in a deeper level text. Legends from around the world will be compared and contrasted this week as well.

Welcome to 7th grade ELA ! Our theme for the year will be Motives of Pursuit. During week one we will be reviewing expectations, rules, and routines. In addition to this, we will discuss our service project for the 9 weeks, which will be linked to our theme. Students will be introduced to skills needed for 7th grade ELA and practice with texts that will prepare them for the first novel, The Prince and Pauper. The first homework assignment is attached.
