Week 1

We hope you enjoyed Fall Break! We start the 2nd 9 weeks on Wednesday.

Students will learn about legends and myths this week in preparation for reading "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by Washington Irving. Using this story, students will practice a variety of skills like compare/contrast, inferring, and analyzing story elements. In addition to stories and informational texts, students will practice reading and analyzing narrative poetry throughout the week.

Week 7

"Oh Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?" In week 7 we will be analyzing drama. We will learn about monologues, soliloquies, and the differences/similarities between the written word and drama. We will use Disney songs and Shakespearean classics to accomplish this. In addition to drama, we will finish Helen Keller's autobiography, The Story of my Life and the play version, The Miracle Worker . Writing and vocabulary will be a focus as well. On Thursday, we will take our Cycle 3 vocabulary quiz . Then, on Friday, we will take a cold quiz and write an on-demand essay.

Week 4

Writing will be a focus this week. The writing process can be challenging, so we will begin the week with a lesson usings peer models. In addition to writing, we will continue reading The Prince and The Pauper. By the end of the week we will have made it to chapter 22! So much happens to Edward in these chapters. He learns valuable lessons that he can use to rule a kingdom. The time period of Tudor England in the 1500s has a rich history. We will read informational articles that will explore it. To cap the week we will take our first cold assessment on Friday .

Week 3

"Give me liberty or give me death!" We are going to be reading about the Revolutionary War and our founding fathers over the next few weeks. Our anchor text will be The Duel . It is an account of  the parallel lives of Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. Using this text and more we will practice recognizing text structures, analysing differing perspectives and comparing/contrasting different accounts of the same event. On Thursday, we will take a cold quiz , and on Friday we will take our Cycle 5 vocabulary quiz.
