7th Grade ELA Week at a Glance

 As a continuation of last week, students will learn about soliloquy and monologue from dramatic form. A variety of media (plays, television, movies) will be used to practice recognizing and understanding these dramatic elements.  The end of the week will be spent writing a soliloquy for a test grade. This graded assignment will be the first test grade for the 2nd 9 weeks.  RWITD will review the most missed questions from Mini Assessment 1.1. 

 Fall Break is Monday and Tuesday! Enjoy your days off. This week will be spent learning about Dramatic Form/Structure. Students will analyze excerpts from dramas and a novel ( Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet ,  Romeo, Juliet: Vampires vs. Werewolve s, and Call of the Wild ) to understand the form and how it is similar to and different from other literary forms.  In addition, they will learn how the form impacts meaning. 

 Nonfiction skills are the focus of week 8. Students will learn about the different text structures, part to whole for development, and the connection between informational text and literature.  On Thursday, students will practice these skills in preparation for a mini-assessment that will be given on Friday. 

 Narrative Writing  Students will write their narratives this week. They will go through the entire process of writing including planning, drafting, revising, peer editing, and individual editing of their final draft. A mini-lesson on transitions will be given to assist students in writing their stories. Assessment 1.1 will be reviewed as well. 

We are at the halfway mark for the 1st 9 weeks. Students have learned skills associated with characterization, plot development, inferencing, central idea, and summarizing, Therefore to assess these skills, students will take their first cold assessment, Assessment 1.1, on Tuesday.   Diction, connotation, and plot structure will be the focus of this week's mini-lessons. Using excerpts and The Call of the Wild, students will practice skills associated with these topics.  Starting Thursday, students will select a narrative prompt and begin to draft a narrative. They will continue this on Friday after the skills check on diction and connotation. 

 We hope you enjoyed Labor Day! Narrative development will be Week Four's focus. Imagery, characterization, and dialogue are concepts that students will learn about and practice recognizing, understanding, and using. They should understand how these elements develop a narrative by Friday.  Students will read the final chapter, 7, of The Call of the Wild . On Friday, students will take a skills assessment. 

Week 3's mini-lessons will focus on skills associated with RL7.3, Analyze how particular elements of a literary text interact. RWITD will focus on Greek and Latin roots.  Using Chapters 5-6 of The Call of the Wild , students will independently practice analyzing character traits, actions, and interactions so that they understand how these develop plot.  On Friday, students will take a skills check quiz on character traits/plot development in literature and interactions in informational text. 

The Fall NWEA for ELA will be given Monday - Tuesday (24-25) of this week.  Central Idea and Summary are the focus in class on Wednesday and Thursday. Mini-lessons on these topics will be followed up by guided and individual practice so that students can practice the skills.  Chapters 3-4 of The Call of the Wild will be read and discussed. In addition, students will use this text to practice skills learned during the mini-lessons. On Friday, students will demonstrate their comprehension of the chapters they have read by completing a standard based quiz on Chapters 1-4. Finally, they will work on a mini comprehension check for Chapter 4 that is project-based. 

Stagger start days will be spent going over rules and procedures, learning about Google Classroom, and getting to know one another. The remainder of the week students will review explicit and implicit comprehension with mini-lessons, guided practice, and individual practice using The Call of the Wild . They will read Chapter 1-2 this week.   On Friday, the students will take two practice assessments that will gauge their knowledge of the skills they learned during the week. 

Students will take Cold Assessment 1.2 on Monday. The rest of the week will be spent learning about plays and terms like monologue and soliloquy. On Wednesday, students will take their Cycle 3 vocabulary quiz . On Friday, teachers will update the data for each student in their folder.

" Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing. " - Helen Keller We will continue reading T he Story of My Life (Chapters 9-14) this week. Students will begin reading The Miracle Worker, which is a play based on Helen Keller's life.  Using this play and the book, students will practice RL 7.5, RL 7.7 and RL. 7.9. These standards focus on structure and compare/contrast. In addition to these skills, students will practice analyzing central idea development. On Wednesday, students will take Cold Quiz 1.3.

" The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart." - Helen Keller We are going to shift our focus from literary texts to informational texts this week by reading Chapters 1-8 of Helen Keller's The Story of My Life . Using this book, students will practice central idea, summary, and a variety of vocabulary strategies. They will have a cold quiz on Tuesday. 

WELCOME TO SCIENCE FICTION WEEK!! Students will focus on science fiction texts this week. Using this genre, they will practice RL 7.3: how literary elements interact. Ray Bradbury is the focus author of this week. We will read two of his stories: "Dark They Were and Golden-Eyed" and "There Will Come Soft Rains." On Friday, we will have a cold quiz and writing assessment grade.

We are over halfway finished with this 9 weeks. Time is flying by, and students are ready for their first cold assessment. It will be on Monday of this week. Students will have the entire block to finish their test. On Tuesday, students will write an on-demand. Then, the rest of the week will be spent revising and editing the on-demand for a grade. In addition to this, any assignments from The Call of the Wild will be finished. On Friday, a quiz on Chapters 5-7 will be given.

We hoped you enjoyed Labor Day! Students will continue their journey with Buck in the Klondike by reding Call of the Wild . Using Chapters 5-7, they will learn and or review  foreshadowing, plot, conflict, anthropomorphism, central idea, theme, and summary. Cycle 2 Vocabulary words will be given this week, so please have your student study them. 

Students will read Chapters 2-4 of Call of the Wild this week. Using these chapters, students will learn about perspective/point of view, summary, conflict, and explicit vs. implicit.  They will continue reviewing and practicing identifying themes and central ideas as well.  Starting Tuesday, students will work on part three of the author study.  Students will take a cold quiz for a grade on Wednesday and the cycle one vocabulary quiz on Thursday . On Friday , students will take a quiz on Chapters 1-4 of Call of the Wild . Make sure to bring your personal book every day to class.

We enjoyed our Klondike adventure last week! Before we can return to the world of Jack London, students must take the ELA NWEA on Monday and Tuesday. Then, the rest of the week will be spent working on the Jack London Author Study and reading Call of the Wild . Students will review central idea and theme with this text. There will be a cold quiz on Wednesday.

Welcome back!!! During this week we will get to know each other, learn expectations, prepare materials for the year, and take a pre-assessment.

Wow! It is hard to believe that we are at the end of the 1st 9 weeks. We will wrap up this 9 weeks by completing a group project on a short story or poem. In preparation for our field trip to the Saenger Theatre on October 17th , we will discuss proper theatre etiquette and read "The Tell-Tale Heart," and "The Monkey's Paw." We will review author's tone using these stories as well. On Wednesday , we will take our last assessment on the computer. It will be an assessment on Cycle 1-4 vocabulary words . On Friday , students will present their projects for an assessment grade .

Golden autumn ways Falling leaves and sunny rays Perfect writing days – Sharon Jones Authors can express a variety of topics using poetry: love, hate, friendship, war...the list goes on and on. We will learn about the different forms and structures of poetry in addition to other poetry terms this week. We will be reading "The Raven," "Annabel Lee," and "Oranges." To end the week, we will have an on-demand writing test grade on Thursday and our last cold assessment of the 9 weeks on Friday .
