7th Grade ELA Week at a Glance

 The week before the holiday break has arrived!  Students will spend this week finishing up their poetry projects, taking Mini Cold Assessment 2.2, and writing an on-demand essay/workshopping it. Any student that has been out will have an opportunity to make up work and/or take the NWEA. Friday will be a 60% day where students will make sure all assignments are complete. 

Week 7 will be a week of daily challenges. There will be no formal work this week. May 11 - Spend some time outdoors today. Write a description of something you saw or did. May 12 - Look through old photos from your childhood and/or ask someone to share stories about your childhood. Share your favorite picture and/or story.  May 13 - Solve the following riddle from The Hobbit: Q:  What is being spoken of in the following verse? Thirty white horses on a red hill, First, they champ, Then they stamp, Then they stand still. May 14 -  Show your appreciation of someone you love by doing something for them, giving them a homemade present, complimenting them or spending some time with them. Share what you did in the comments.  May 15 - Try to find the funniest (clean) video on YouTube.  Post it on Padlet. During this short week, students will take Cold Mini Assessment 3.2 , read The Prince and the Pauper play, and may work on other assignments each teacher feels is necessary.

The Winter NWEA is here. Students will take the reading NWEA on Monday and Tuesday. The rest of the week will be spent reading informational texts about war and The Duel .  Using these texts, students will learn the ARCH method, practice recognizing central ideas and analyzing the interactions of ideas, people, and events. On Thursday, students will take a practice cold quiz.

WELCOME TO SCIENCE FICTION WEEK!! Students will focus on science fiction texts this week. Using this genre, they will practice RL 7.3: how literary elements interact. Ray Bradbury is the focus author of this week. We will read two of his stories: "Dark They Were and Golden-Eyed" and "There Will Come Soft Rains." On Friday, we will have a cold quiz and writing assessment grade.

 Students will take the ELA Reading exam on Tuesday and the ELA Writing exam on Wednesday of this week.  Please, make every effort to be here on time and well-rested.  The rest of the week will be spent reading The Outsiders and completing activities related to the chapters. Students will read to Ch. 8 this week. In addition to this novel, students will begin working on their Narrative Project . Students will plan an in-depth narrative and write it for a test grade . The assignment is due May 10th .

We hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving break and are ready for the last stretch before Christmas break! Students will continue reading Hidden Figures this week.In addition to this text, students will be exposed to cultural and historical events from the same time period as the book. We will review structure, vocabulary, central ideas, arguments and interactions between individuals, events, and ideas. In addition to language standards students will practice writing thesis statements and meaningful commentary. On Thursday , students will take a cold quiz . Then, on Friday, students will complete stations to review theme and interactions.

"Oh Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?" In week 7 we will be analyzing drama. We will learn about monologues, soliloquies, and the differences/similarities between the written word and drama. We will use Disney songs and Shakespearean classics to accomplish this. In addition to drama, we will finish Helen Keller's autobiography, The Story of my Life and the play version, The Miracle Worker . Writing and vocabulary will be a focus as well. On Thursday, we will take our Cycle 3 vocabulary quiz . Then, on Friday, we will take a cold quiz and write an on-demand essay.
