Week 9

Wow! It is hard to believe that we are at the end of the 1st 9 weeks. We will wrap up this 9 weeks by completing a group project on a short story or poem. In preparation for our field trip to the Saenger Theatre on October 17th , we will discuss proper theatre etiquette and read "The Tell-Tale Heart," and "The Monkey's Paw." We will review author's tone using these stories as well. On Wednesday , we will take our last assessment on the computer. It will be an assessment on Cycle 1-4 vocabulary words . On Friday , students will present their projects for an assessment grade .

Week 8

Golden autumn ways Falling leaves and sunny rays Perfect writing days – Sharon Jones Authors can express a variety of topics using poetry: love, hate, friendship, war...the list goes on and on. We will learn about the different forms and structures of poetry in addition to other poetry terms this week. We will be reading "The Raven," "Annabel Lee," and "Oranges." To end the week, we will have an on-demand writing test grade on Thursday and our last cold assessment of the 9 weeks on Friday .

Week 7

"Oh Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?" In week 7 we will be analyzing drama. We will learn about monologues, soliloquies, and the differences/similarities between the written word and drama. We will use Disney songs and Shakespearean classics to accomplish this. In addition to drama, we will finish Helen Keller's autobiography, The Story of my Life and the play version, The Miracle Worker . Writing and vocabulary will be a focus as well. On Thursday, we will take our Cycle 3 vocabulary quiz . Then, on Friday, we will take a cold quiz and write an on-demand essay.

Week 6

We will say goodbye to Edward and Tom on Monday by writing an on-demand focusing on the last chapter of the novel, The Prince and the Pauper.   On Tuesday, we will turn our attention to non-fiction and say hello to Helen Keller in her novel, The Story of My Life . While we read her fascinating story, we'll practice our written responses and analyze central idea and interactions of story elements.  Our cycle three words will be introduced this week with a fun activity on multiple meanings and slang words. In the middle of the week we will reflect on our first cold assessment and take a cold quiz . Helen Keller and vocabulary will be our focus the rest of the week. However, on Friday, we will read Helen's story from a different perspective in the play, The Miracle Worker.  Once we read this version, we'll be able to compare and contrast the two accounts.
