7th Grade ELA Week at a Glance

 This is the last week of the 9 weeks. Students will begin a new book this week, The Duel . This book will be used to teach a wide variety of skills and standards including differing portrayals of information, historical texts vs. fictional stories, and argument. We will learn about bias, tracing arguments, and review denotation and connotation as well this week.   

 Fall Break is Monday and Tuesday! Enjoy your days off. This week will be spent learning about Dramatic Form/Structure. Students will analyze excerpts from dramas and a novel ( Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet ,  Romeo, Juliet: Vampires vs. Werewolve s, and Call of the Wild ) to understand the form and how it is similar to and different from other literary forms.  In addition, they will learn how the form impacts meaning. 

We will finish reading excerpts from The Prince and the Pauper this week. The following skills will be taught using this book: flat/round/static/dynamic characters, point of view/perspective, and compare/contrast history to fiction. In addition to these skills, students will practice analyzing speeches with their RWITD. Also, the King Henry VIII argument will be planned this week. Teachers will review the argument structure and counterclaim. Finally, on Tuesday, Cycle 9 vocab. qui z will be given and on Friday Cold Assessment 3.2 will be taken. 

Christmas break starts at the end of this week! Friday is a 60% day. The final week of Term 2 will be spent finishing up assignments from The Duel and any writings not complete from last week. Students may be required to finish The Plague essay, The Duel Notice Chart, Essential Questions from The Duel or The Duel Narrative Project. Congrats to Mrs. Hardin's 3rd block for showing the most percentile growth on the ELA NWEA from Fall to Winter! They will enjoy a popcorn movie party on Wednesday.

NWEA is here! Students will take the Spring ELA NWEA on Monday and Tuesday . Please, come prepared. As a final group project before the end of the year, students will write and perform a play. Therefore, students will review plays in preparation for this project. Then, they will team up to begin working on their plays that they will perform next week. Some classes may still be working on the Narrative Project or finishing up activities related to The Outsiders .  Friday is Field Day for students.

We made it to the final week before Spring Break! This week will be project based with a few lessons on narrative. On Monday and Tuesday we will focus on dialogue and rewriting endings of narratives. Then, students will work on their Jack London Short Story Project . On Wednesday , they will take Cold Quiz 3.6 and work on their projects. On Thursday , students will  begin the day by taking the Cycle 11 Vocab. Quiz . Afterwards, they will present their projects. Friday will be a makeup day/ a time to compare visual versions to the written stories we've read.

NWEA testing will be conducted this week. Students will take the Reading test on Monday and Tuesday. Please make sure students are well rested and have had breakfast on those days. During the rest of the week students will present their Hidden Figures projects for an assessment grade . The final vocabulary quiz (Cycle 7)  of the term will be given on Friday .

Wow! It is hard to believe that we are at the end of the 1st 9 weeks. We will wrap up this 9 weeks by completing a group project on a short story or poem. In preparation for our field trip to the Saenger Theatre on October 17th , we will discuss proper theatre etiquette and read "The Tell-Tale Heart," and "The Monkey's Paw." We will review author's tone using these stories as well. On Wednesday , we will take our last assessment on the computer. It will be an assessment on Cycle 1-4 vocabulary words . On Friday , students will present their projects for an assessment grade .
